Halloween costume eye accessories can be a risk to your vision...

It is that time of year again. October means Halloween is just around the corner and children are picking out their costumes. Every year there are new scary costumes at your neighborhood Halloween store. Will your child be a ghost? A goblin? A witch? A vampire? Something else? While Halloween is supposed to be scary in a fun way, accessories associated with Halloween costumes can actually cause serious problems.

Have you seen pictures of a costume where the model has bright orange or red eyes? Those are actually contact lenses. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the doctors at the Taustine Eye Center are warning the public to avoid purchasing costume contact lenses without a prescription. If you see these contact lenses at a Halloween store they are actually illegally being sold. They may not be sterile and can cause serious eye problems. According to a recent AAO article, in 2005 after reports surfaced that these accessories were causing eye injuries and infections, "the Federal Drug Administration classified all contact lenses as medical devices and restricted their distribution to licensed eye care professionals, effectively banning sales of non-prescription contact lenses." Please be careful as we would hate to have what is supposed to be a fun Halloween night turn into an actual nightmare.

These decorative non-prescription contact lenses can cause scratches, sores, infections, and even blindness. Please don't let a Halloween costume ruin your child's night. Talk to your ophthalmologist to learn more. Thomas Steinemann, M.D., and a clinical spokesperson for AAO, who treats many of these cases each year says, "I hate to think of all the young people who might be buying these non-prescription contact lenses on Halloween, only to end up with an infection that can ruin their sight forever."

Please check out the AAO article below to learn more about the dangers as well as Costume Contact Lens Safety Guidelines.
