Today we decided to take a little break from discussing ophthalmology. Being an eye practice in the city of Louisville, no time of year is more exciting than these final few weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby (okay maybe basketball season is up there). Exciting events are taking place every weekend (Thunder Over Louisville, Derby Marathon, Balloon Glow, Pegasus Parade, and more!). We are here today to give you a little insight into the horses expected to race on that first Saturday in May and perhaps help you pick out the one special horse that just might 'Run for the Roses.'

Here are the top 10 Kentucky Derby points standings as of April 17th:

1. Girvin (1st place in the Louisiana Derby and Risen Star Stakes) [150 points]

2. Classic Empire (1st place in the Arkansas Derby; Classic Empire ended 2016 as the best juvenile in the United States after winning the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile)

3. Gormley (1st place in the Santa Anita Derby)

4. Irap (stunning victory at the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, he entered the Blue Grass at 33-1 odds having yet to win a race; he's trained by Doug O'Neil and owned by Reddam Racing which is the same team that produced last year's Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist)

5. Irish War Cry

6. Thunder Snow (IRE)

7. Always Dreaming (trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher)

8. Gunnevera [84 points]

9. Practical Joke (2nd place in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Kentucky birthplace)

10. J Boys Echo (Louisville trainer Dale Romans, Jr., 4th place in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Kentucky bred) [63 points]

Did you know only 12 horses have won the Triple Crown of horse racing (winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont)? Prior to American Pharoah winning the Triple Crown in 2015, the last winner was in 1978 with Affirmed. That's a THIRTY-SEVEN year wait! Let's rewatch that amazing final Belmont race by American Pharoah:
