Important tips to protect your eyes from sun damage

Summer is officially here. What do you think of when you think of summer? I think of days spent at the pool, cookouts, trips to the park, bike rides, trips to the beach, summer camps, boating, and a whole lot more. What is one thing those activities all have in common? In addition to just overall fun memories, I’m thinking of bright, sunny summer days. While we all love those days, sun actually has harmful, UV rays that can be dangerous if you don’t take the necessary precautions. Yes dangerous. These harmful rays can cause cataracts, temporary blindness within hours, cancers, macular degeneration, among others.
So, that’s what we’re going to do today. Let’s talk about some important tips to protect against those harmful rays.
1). Did you know not all sunglasses provide adaquate protection? When buying sunglasses you need to look for labels that read, “UV400” or “100 percent UV protection.” Make sure to also wear your sunglasses on overcast days.
2). Wear a hat as well! In addition to wearing proper sunglasses, you also need to wear a hat with a broad brim.
3). Wear sunscreen! While we might be ophthalmologists, we are also medical professionals. We are here to promote all aspects of living a healthy lifestyle. So, be sure to put on sunscreen before you go outside. Also, it doesn’t matter if it’s a cloudy day. This next point is especially important. If you go swimming or participate in an activity wear you might sweat a lot, make sure to reapply throughout the day. Overall, if you’re going to be in the sun for long periods of time, make sure to reapply regardless.
