Simple Steps You Can Take to Protect Your Sight

 
The calendar has turned to May which is Healthy Vision Month. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) has some simple tips you can take to help protect your eye sight.  According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), approximately 37 million adults in America have age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma, all of which can cause visual impairment or blindness. But recent studies show that some simple tips like making healthy choices and getting your regular eye exams can help reduce your risk of vision loss. So, in honor of Healthy Vision Month, let’s encourage our family and friends to be proactive by taking charge of their eye health and preserving their sight by following these simple tips:
1). Live a Healthy Lifestyle–
Have a healthy diet (vitamin C rich foods, dark green leafy vegetables),  exercise regularly, and don’t smoke
2). Know your Family History–
You an inherit certain eye diseases. If you have a close relative with macular degeneration, you have a 50 percent chance of developing the condition.
3). Get a Dilated Eye Exam–
Have a regular eye exam. But, make sure you are dilated because that is the best way to detect eye diseases
4). Wear Sunglasses–
Choose sunglasses that block out at least 99 percent of UV rays
5). Use Protective Eyewear to Prevent Injuries–            
Wear the right protective eyewear when doing activities that could cause eye injuries. A recent study in the journal Ophthalmology, shows that rougly a third of all emergency room visits for eye-related issues come from traumatic eye injuries.
